Tinnitus Fact #1 The number one CAUSE of tinnitus is hearing damage.

Tinnitus Fact #2 About 10 million people in the United States alone suffer from CHRONIC TINNITUS,
the type of tinnitus that hinders a person from functioning normally.
Does it make you feel better to know that you are not alone and that there are people who understand what you are going through? I know it made me feel a lot better. It gave me hope that there were people to talk to, people who could empathize, and people who could help.
I do not suffer from tinnitus, I never have. But my daughter, Lydia (Liddy for short), suffered from tinnitus for a little over ten years. She was twenty years old when a combination of loud noises (the firecrackers on the 4th of July and the blaring large speaker which she sat beside) left her with tinnitus.
At first I didn't understand what she meant when she said she was hearing “buzzing” in her ears. She was fond of rock music, after all, and I figured she was just remembering what she would hear when she'd have her headphones on all day.
It wasn't until three or four days later when I noticed how sluggish she was, still complaining about noises and being crabby about it now. I realized she wasn't sleeping well, and she said it was because of the noise. A little bit of research and a trip to my doctor led us to the conclusion that she might have tinnitus.

My general practitioner referred me to two other doctors, a hearing specialist and an ear and sound specialist. They conducted tests who conducted tests to see how bad the tinnitus was, and if it truly was tinnitus. The results showed that Liddy had an almost “classic case” of tinnitus: a pitch match of 3,500 Hertz (Hz) and a loudness of 7 decibels (dB.)
I remember sighing with relief. It had been about two and a half weeks since she'd first complained about the “buzzing.” By then she only slept when extremely exhausted, she was cranky all the time, she'd stopped going out to see her friends, had difficulty eating, and seemed really sad and upset. I knew that knowing what it was and the specific characteristics would finally help her, and help me avoid dealing with yet another round of doctors who would have to help a depressed twenty year old cope with life!!

After the doctors gave me their conclusions, I asked them what the next step was. My audiologist, a lovely and sweet woman, looked at me sympathetically and smiled. She sat me down, and together with my general practitioner, they told me that our next step was to “help her cope.” They told me what many doctors might have told you. They told me that there is no cure for tinnitus, you just have to live with it.
I didn't want to believe that. I didn't want that for my daughter. The only ray of hope the doctors gave me was that tinnitus sometimes disappears in time. They also gave Liddy some medicine, referred her to a psychiatrist, taught her techniques to ignore the noise and “listen to the outside,” and set up future appointments so they could monitor her condition.
Tinnitus Fact #3
There are over 200 types of medication that can CAUSE tinnitus.
So I went home and did as the doctors asked. I tried to help her cope... We weren't able to do it in time.
Liddy was home for the summer, and we hoped we could diminish the noise in her ears or get her somewhat adjusted before she had to go back to school. But it was HARD! First she had to adjust and come to terms with the fact that she may have this condition for the rest of her life. I could see she was becoming depressed.
It broke my heart to watch her struggle. I wondered how she would deal with school, knowing that teachers may not be patient enough to wait for her to have learned her lessons. I would cry silently to sleep at night knowing that, in the next room, she may not sleep at all.
Though some people say that the worse feeling in the world is the feeling of being unable to help yourself, I think the worst feeling is being unable to help your child.
Tinnitus Fact #4
There are 12 different types of tinnitus.

I woke up one day and decided we would not be defeated. I held the conviction that a life with tinnitus was not the life for her. I sat with my doctors and started planning. They were there to guide me and to help me space out and assess the various treatment methods we would be trying. The only treatment that wasn't an option was surgery. Liddy was allergic to anesthesia, something we had found out from a frightening experience when she was younger (a case of childhood appendicitis), and so she was deathly afraid of going under the knife. That was ruled out from the very first day.
Liddy had taken a sabbatical from school, wanting to learn how to cope with her condition better. So we set off on our quest. First, we put all of her medical records together, and compiled her medical history. Then we found every doctor and every credible person who claimed to know about the subject, and who said they'd be able to help. I started to set up appointments, starting with the ones who were nearby. They would all see Lydia, look at the records I compiled, and recommend tweaking this technique or changing that method.
When their methods and techniques didn't work, it was back to the drawing board. I made long distance calls to people who were too far to get to by car, but claimed to have a new system for tinnitus. I faxed Liddy's records over every time something seemed promising. I even flew Liddy and myself to England once, to see a specialist who monitored our case only to come up with the same answer all the others had.
After fives years of this, I was tired. Liddy was tired. She had finished college, which was an amazing triumph for us, but she was having a hard time adjusting to working. She felt isolated and not normal. She had stopped dating because her self-esteem was pretty low. “What if I don't hear them correctly?” or “What if they don't understand?” was always her question.

In one of my days off, I was having a cup of coffee and talking to my sister-in-law. She was listening to me complain, quietly, the way she always would. When I had finished a stream of complaints, she put her hand on top of mind and asked me “Have you tried any techniques from Eastern medicine? Any natural or holistic methods?”
That surprised me. I honestly hadn't thought of it. Though holistic methods and naturopathy are all the rage now, at the time they were still only slowly gaining popularity. I had tried everything else for Lydia. What did I have to lose with trying something new?
The next Monday I called my doctors and asked them about the idea. They were skeptical. Not wanting to force them to help me with something they didn't believe in, I set out to do it on my own.
I hunted down eastern medicine practitioners, looked for people who practiced naturopathy, homeopathy, holistic medicine, etc. You name it, I've talked to them! Again I showed them Liddy's medical records, gave them her history, and gave them a journal of notes I had been keeping through the years which documented instances when Liddy would say it was better or worse.
They told me something vital. Something I hadn't thought of.

They were right. It is all too often that tinnitus is not the problem itself, but is the EFFECT of underlying problems, even seemingly harmless problems! There are Western doctors that admit this now!
So with the help of a new doctor and renewed energy, I set off to find a natural and holistic cure for Liddy's tinnitus. It took us four years of testing, trying, and tweaking in order to get it right, but sure enough, we found a method that worked!
It worked! In what seemed like no time, Liddy began to improve. The noise not just diminished (which often happened before with other medications),... it disappeared! Gone! Stopped! Eliminated!
Liddy was ecstatic. I was crying with joy. We couldn't believe it. Free at last!
The system changed her life. Though Liddy had always tried to be pleasant throughout her struggles, I rediscovered how sweet she really was. Now that her brain was free from noise, she was able to apply herself at getting a job! Now that she FELT normal, she started doing more normal things, making more friends, listening to a variety of music, and she even started dating again!
It was a long time coming. Victory was so sweet!

Tinnitus Fact #5
Tinnitus can be connected to hearing loss, and hearing loss can be an effect of tinnitus.

In the beginning I was too happy about our success to think about anything else. Liddy had gotten a great job, moved out of the house, and was dating a really nice restaurant owner whose family we were acquainted with.
Some time after, my sister-in-law told me that she had told an acquaintance about our success, who coincidentally had a wife who suffered from tinnitus. I thought about the struggle my daughter and I went through. My sister-in-law told him about what we did, and sent him an email with all the details.
Their success got us thinking. Maybe this technique will work for plenty of other people as well! So, we decided to write about it! After a couple of months of collaborative work, research, combining the gathered information, and fixing it into a logical and easy to read format, we came up with our own tinnitus system!
What You Eat Can Help or Worsen Your Tinnitus
Our body is reliant on many different factors to function properly. One of the most important factors is our diet. What we eat can be an underlying cause for many of the problems we encounter with our health. It may be a cliché, but it's true. A healthy diet equals a healthy you.
Food to Avoid:
Caffeine and alcohol are two substances that have been linked to tinnitus. Some tinnitus sufferers claim that beverages which contain either of these substances do make their tinnitus worse.
Food to Eat:
Foods high in vitamin B12 may help tinnitus. Deficiency of this vitamin has been linked to tinnitus. Sometimes sufferers are advised to eat foods like beef, clams, trout, yogurt, fortified cereal, and other foods high in vitamin B12.
There are plenty of other foods to eat and other foods to avoid. Learn about them now!
